The ceramics facilities at Scarborough Mates are designed to provide learners with a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience, whilst allowing experienced ceramicists more of a free rein.
We have a potter’s wheel, a kiln and ample workspace in the Activities Room for individual projects as well as group learning.
There are dedicated shelves in our kiln room where work in progress can be safely stored out of harm’s way.
We have different clays, clay working tools and glazes available to use, and experienced instructors/tutors around to help.
If you have little or no prior experience we offer workshops and courses where individuals can be part of a group lead by an experienced tutor.
If you are already an experienced ceramicist then you might want to consider joining as a ‘Ceramic Mate’ for an additional £7 per month (total monthly membership fee £22). This is aimed at non-commercial ceramicists who can come into Mates to ‘play with clay’ at times to suit themselves whenever space in the Activities Room, or at the potter’s wheel is available. It includes the use of clay, glazes, and all firing.
For health and safety reasons, anyone wanting to use the potter’s wheel needs to be assessed and signed off by one of our tutors before they are able to use it independently.
